The quaint town of Atherstone, situated in the heart of Warwickshire, is steeped in rich history. One intriguing aspect of its past is its once-thriving hat industry. In its heyday during the 17th century, Atherstone was known as the 'hatting town' of England, with the majority of the townsfolk actively engaged in the hat-making trade. The town's hat industry reached its peak during the 18th century, with Atherstone made hats being exported all over the world. This significant trade has left an indelible mark on the town, with the annual 'Atherstone Ball Game' being a testament to the town's hatter roots. The game involves a large ball being passed around the town, reflective of how hatters would traditionally pass their hats around to collect payment.
Another fascinating facet of Atherstone's history is its connection to the famous Warwickshire author, George Eliot, who used the town as an inspiration for her novel 'Adam Bede'. Eliot, born Mary Ann Evans, was a local to the area and drew heavily from her surroundings in Atherstone, especially its rural landscapes and the hardworking ethos of its hat-making community. Today, the town proudly acknowledges this literary connection with a permanent exhibition dedicated to George Eliot at the local library. Furthermore, the town's landscape still maintains a Victorian charm, offering a glimpse into the setting that inspired one of Britain's most celebrated authors.
