The town of Coleford, situated in the heart of the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, England, holds a rich and fascinating history. One intriguing aspect is its significant role in the Industrial Revolution. Coleford was a hub for coal mining and iron production, with the Forest of Dean being one of the most important iron-mining regions in the United Kingdom during the 19th century. The Darkhill Ironworks, located nearby, is even considered a cradle of the Industrial Revolution for its groundbreaking developments in iron production technology. The remains of the ironworks are now a scheduled ancient monument and an internationally significant industrial archaeology site.
Coleford also has a uniquely cultural side. The town is the birthplace of two notable musicians: Dr. William Henry Monk, composer of the famous hymn "Abide with Me", was born in Coleford in 1823. In more recent times, the town was also the birthplace of one of the founding members of the band EMF, James Atkin. Coleford is a market town in the west of the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England, two miles (3 km) east of the Welsh border and close to the Wye Valley. It is the administrative centre of the Forest of Dean district. The combined population of the town's two electoral wards at the 2011 census was 8,359. The population of the town's parish was 9,273 in the 2021 Census. The parish includes the village of Baker's Hill.
