The Town of Deal, located in Kent, England, holds a unique place in the military history of the United Kingdom. It was home to the Royal Marines School of Music from 1861 until 1996, making it a significant centre for military music. The school was originally established at the Eastney Barracks in Portsmouth but was moved to the Royal Naval Hospital, Deal, in 1861. It remained there for over a century, producing many outstanding musicians. In 1996, the school was relocated to Portsmouth, leaving behind a rich legacy. This history is commemorated by the Deal Memorial Bandstand, built in 1997, after the bombing of the school in 1989 by the Irish Republican Army (IRA), where eleven musicians were tragically killed.
Deal is also notable for its distinct architectural heritage. The town is home to a unique type of house known as a "Deal Cottage." These dwellings are characterized by their long, narrow design with a facade facing the sea. Originally built for the town's mariners and fishermen in the 18th and 19th centuries, these cottages feature long, narrow gardens that are equally distinctive. The gardens were used to dry nets and store fishing equipment. Today, many of these charming cottages still stand, serving as a fascinating reminder of Deal's maritime past. In 2017, the town was even named as one of the top 30 best places for a weekend retreat by The Times, highlighting its enduring appeal.
Deal is a coastal town in Kent, England, which lies where the North Sea and the English Channel meet, 8 miles (13 km) north-east of Dover and 8 miles (13 km) south of Ramsgate. It is a former fishing, mining and garrison town whose history is closely linked to the anchorage in the Downs. Close to Deal is Walmer, a possible location for Julius Caesar's first arrival in Britain. Deal became a 'limb port' of the Cinque Ports in 1278 and grew into the busiest port in England; today it is a seaside resort, its quaint streets and houses a reminder of its history along with many ancient buildings and monuments. In 1968, Middle Street was the first conservation area in Kent. The coast of France is approximately 25 miles (40 km) from the town and is visible on clear days. The Tudor-era Deal Castle, commissioned by then-King, Henry VIII, has a rose floor plan.
