This strategic location has played an instrumental role in the town's growth and prosperity, contributing to its prominence as a vital centre for cloth production in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Geographically, Frome is a marvel, situated in the eastern part of Somerset, near the Mendip Hills. The town's topography features a delightful blend of steep, winding streets, lined with historic buildings of every era, from the medieval to the Georgian, Victorian, and contemporary. The River Frome shapes the landscape, adding a picturesque charm to the town's scenery.
The town is also home to some notable landmarks, including the Black Swan Arts Centre, which celebrates the area's rich artistic heritage, and the Frome Museum, that tells the story of the town's industrial and social history. Perhaps the most distinctive landmark is the Cheap Street, a preserved medieval street, complete with a leat running down its centre, a feature unique to Frome.

Frome, a charming market town in Somerset, England, holds a unique place in the industrial history of the United Kingdom. It was once the heart of the national wool and cloth industry, but its importance did not end there. In the late 17th century, Frome became a hub for metalwork, particularly in brass and copper. The town was home to J.W. Singer & Sons Ltd., a statue factory that produced some of the world's most famous statues, including Justice, which stands atop the Old Bailey in London, and King Alfred's statue in Winchester. The company, established in 1851, was one of the largest employers in Frome, highlighting the town's significant contribution to the country's industrial heritage.
Another fascinating aspect of Frome is its innovative approach to community welfare and sustainability. In an attempt to boost local trade and foster community spirit, Frome launched its own local currency - the 'Frome Pound' - in 2014. Though it was phased out in 2018, the initiative was a unique way to encourage residents to support local businesses and stimulate the town's economy. In addition, Frome is known for its 'Share Shop,' a pioneering project that allows residents to borrow items rather than buying them, reducing waste and promoting a sharing economy. This innovative approach to sustainability and community cooperation sets Frome apart as a town deeply invested in the well-being of its residents and the environment.

The town was enlarged during the 20th century but retains a large number of listed buildings, and most of the centre falls within a conservation area. The town has road and rail transport links and acts as an economic centre for the surrounding area. It provides a centre for cultural and sporting activities, including the annual Frome Festival and Frome Museum. In 2014, Frome was named by The Times the "sixth coolest town" in Britain.
