The Town of Hedon, nestled in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, boasts a rich history that dates back to the medieval times. One particularly fascinating aspect of its historical narrative is that Hedon was once an important port. This might seem surprising today, given its inland position, but during the 12th and 13th centuries, Hedon had direct access to the sea via the River Humber. It even rivalled the city of Kingston upon Hull in terms of maritime significance. The town's decline as a port began in the 14th century due to silting of the Haven, and by the 19th century, it had lost its maritime status completely, transforming into the quaint market town we see today.
Another intriguing but lesser-known fact about Hedon revolves around the imposing structure of St. Augustine's Church, often called the 'King of Holderness'. This masterpiece of medieval architecture, visible from miles around, stands as a testament to Hedon's past prosperity. However, the church hides a secret - it was never fully completed! In the 13th century, a grand plan was set into motion to build a cathedral-sized church, but due to unknown reasons, only the chancel, transepts, and a part of the nave were completed. Despite its incomplete state, the church's stunning architectural features and fascinating history make it a must-visit site in Hedon.
