The town of Jarrow, located in Tyne and Wear, England, is deeply steeped in historical significance, particularly in the realm of religion. It is notably the home to the twin monastic sites of Jarrow and Wearmouth, collectively recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site was established by Benedict Biscop in the 7th century, with the Jarrow part being the home of the Venerable Bede, an English monk who is often referred to as 'The Father of English History'. Bede's scholarly works in theology and history, notably 'Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum', provided an invaluable perspective on the early English Christian church and Anglo-Saxon kingdom.
In a more contemporary context, Jarrow is known for the historical event called 'Jarrow March'. In 1936, during the Great Depression, 200 jobless men from Jarrow embarked on a 300-mile march to London to petition the government for employment and to draw attention to the severe unemployment and poverty levels in the north-east of England. This march, also known as the 'Jarrow Crusade', had a profound impact on public opinion and is considered a defining moment in British social history, highlighting the plight of the working class during the economic downturn. The event is commemorated in the town till today, with a sculpture depicting the marchers located in Jarrow's town centre.
