Llandrindod Wells, or 'Llandod' as it's locally known, is a historic spa town that saw its heyday in the 19th century when it was famed for its healing waters. The town's Victorian heritage is still evident in its architecture, particularly the impressive Metropole Hotel, built in 1896. However, the unique aspect of Llandrindod Wells' history is that it was one of the few spa towns whose popularity did not wane with the advent of the railway. On the contrary, the opening of the Heart of Wales Line in 1865, which linked Llandrindod Wells with Swansea and Shrewsbury, helped boost the town's status as a health resort, drawing visitors from far and wide to 'take the waters'.
Another fascinating facet of Llandrindod Wells is its standing as the home of the National Cycle Museum. This museum, located in the town's Automobile Palace, houses a collection of over 250 bicycles, some of which date back to 1818. It's a treasure trove for cycling enthusiasts and historians alike, showcasing the evolution of the bicycle from its earliest incarnations to modern high-tech designs. The museum is a testament to Llandrindod Wells' commitment to preserving its history and its passion for cycling, which is also demonstrated by the town's annual hosting of the Victorian Festival, where participants can be seen riding penny-farthings and other vintage cycles through the streets in period costume.
Llandrindod Wells ( local pronunciation: [ndrndd-]; Welsh: Llandrindod, Welsh pronunciation: [andindd] lit. "Trinity Parish"), sometimes known colloquially as Landod or simply Dod, is a town and community in Powys, within the historic boundaries of Radnorshire, Wales. It serves as the seat of Powys County Council and thus the administrative centre of Powys. It was developed as a spa town in the 19th century, with a boom in the late 20th century as a centre of local government. Before the 1860s the site of the town was common land in Llanfihangel Cefnllys parish. Llandrindod Wells is the fifth largest town in Powys and the largest in Radnorshire. The population as of the 2021 UK census was 5,602, an increase on the previous census.
