Now available in Oban
Tucked into the scenic landscape of the West Coast of Scotland lies Oban, a gem in the sparkling crown of Argyll and Bute. This charming town, with its breathtaking views of islands, lochs, and mountains, is steeped in rich history and Scottish heritage, making it a significant location within the United Kingdom.
Oban, often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Isles,' serves as the main departure point for many of the ferries sailing to the Hebrides. Its strategic position on the coast has ensured its maritime significance for centuries. It is a town that has evolved with the times, yet one that respects and preserves its historical roots.
Historically, Oban played a crucial role during World War II as a military base for the Royal Navy. This small town was fundamental in defending the United Kingdom's home front and remains a testament to the power of community and perseverance in the face of adversity.
Visitors and residents alike are greeted by the unmistakable silhouette of McCaig's Tower, a prominent landmark that dominates the town's skyline. This unique structure, inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, is more than a monument: it is a symbol of Oban's distinct identity. The tower, along with the Oban Distillery, one of Scotland's oldest sources of the single malt Scotch whisky, testify to the town's long-standing commitment to tradition and innovation.

The picturesque town of Oban, often referred to as the 'Seafood Capital of Scotland', holds a unique place in Scotland's history for its whisky distillery. The Oban Distillery, one of the oldest in the country, was established before the town itself. Founded in 1794 by brothers Hugh and John Stevenson, the distillery is a significant part of the town's development. Despite its small size, it produces whisky that is highly appreciated globally. The distillery's unique location and the influence of the sea contribute to the distinctive West Highland flavour profile of Oban's single malt whisky, offering a fascinating combination of the malty sweetness typical of Highland whiskies and the peaty, smoky character more common in Islay whiskies.
Another captivating aspect of Oban is its contribution to the world of academia. The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), one of the oldest oceanographic organisations in the world, is based in Dunstaffnage, just outside Oban. The research institution, founded in 1884, has made significant contributions to marine and environmental science. It was SAMS researchers who discovered the occurrence of 'marine snow', a continuous shower of mostly organic detritus falling from the upper layers of the water column. This phenomenon is of great importance for the distribution and abundance of organisms in the deep sea. The presence of SAMS not only makes Oban an important hub for marine research but also adds an educational aspect to this beautiful coastal town.
Oban ( OH-bn; Scottish Gaelic: An t-ban [n tpan] meaning The Little Bay) is a resort town within the Argyll and Bute council area of Scotland. Despite its small size, it is the largest town between Helensburgh and Fort William. During the tourist season, the town can have a temporary population of up to over 24,000 people. Oban occupies a setting in the Firth of Lorn. The bay forms a near perfect horseshoe, protected by the island of Kerrera; and beyond Kerrera, the Isle of Mull. To the north, is the long low island of Lismore and the mountains of Morvern and Ardgour.
