The town of Peacehaven, situated on the Southern coast of East Sussex, England, holds a rather intriguing historical significance. It was originally known as 'New Anzac-on-Sea', a name coined by its Australian founder, Charles Neville. Neville, a First World War veteran, bought a large portion of the land in 1916 and started a competition to name the new town. 'New Anzac-on-Sea' was a tribute to Anzac soldiers who fought during the Great War. However, the name did not resonate with locals, and it was subsequently changed to 'Peacehaven' in 1920, symbolising tranquillity and rest after the war.
Peacehaven is also home to a geographical marvel, the Prime Meridian line. This invisible line of longitude, which divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western hemispheres, passes directly through the town. A monument dedicated to this significant geographical feature can be found at the Meridian Park in Peacehaven. Interestingly, while the Prime Meridian is known to pass through Greenwich in London, it extends all the way down to Peacehaven, making the town an integral part of global geography. Indeed, standing at the monument, one can enjoy the unique experience of having one foot in the Western Hemisphere and the other in the Eastern Hemisphere.
Peacehaven is a town and civil parish in the Lewes district of East Sussex, England. It is located above the chalk cliffs of the South Downs approximately six miles (9.7 km) east of Brighton city centre, on the A259 road. Its site coincides with the point where the Greenwich meridian crosses the English south coast. Peacehaven is next to Telscombe Cliffs, a later western extension to Peacehaven, which lies within a separate parish and has a separate town council.
