The town of Tavistock, situated in Devon, England, holds an intriguing link to the realm of literature. It is the birthplace of the famed explorer, Sir Francis Drake, who has inspired a wealth of literary works spanning centuries. However, what is lesser-known is the town's connection to the celebrated author Arthur Conan Doyle, best known for his Sherlock Holmes series. In one of his novels, 'The Hound of the Baskervilles', the town of Tavistock is mentioned as a location, which has since heightened the town's allure to literature enthusiasts. Thus, Tavistock possesses a captivating literary history that intertwines with its own local history, making it a unique point of interest in the United Kingdom.
In addition to its literary significance, Tavistock is also noteworthy for its long-standing markets. Tavistock Pannier Market, dating back to 1105, has been a constant presence in the town's life for centuries, granted by royal charter in the reign of Henry I. Today, the market continues to operate, selling a variety of goods from local produce to antiques, attracting visitors from near and far. The market's longevity and continued operation speak volumes about Tavistock's economic resilience and commitment to local trade. This enduring tradition offers a fascinating glimpse into the town's past and its resistance to the homogenising forces of modern retail.
