The Town of Wick, nestled in the Highlands of Scotland, has a unique history steeped in the fishing industry. One captivating fact about it is that it was once the world's largest producer of herring. In the mid-19th century, Wick was a bustling hub for herring fishing, attracting thousands of fishermen and fish gutters during the peak season. The harbour was often filled with more than a thousand boats, and the fish were processed and barrelled on a large scale. The town's significant contribution to the herring industry earned it the moniker, 'Herring Capital of Europe'. This lesser-known fact showcases the industrial heritage of Wick and its crucial role in Scotland's maritime history.
Another intriguing fact about Wick is tied to its geographical location. Despite being perched in the far north of the Scottish mainland, Wick holds the record for the shortest ever scheduled flight. This flight, operated by British Airways between Wick and the Orkney island of Westray, was logged in the Guinness Book of Records in 1994. The total flight time, under ideal weather conditions, could be as short as 96 seconds, covering a distance of approximately 2.7 kilometres. This unusual record, though not widely known, puts Wick on the map as a unique and interesting destination within Scotland's vast and varied landscape.

Elzy was described as on the coast a couple of miles east of Wick in 1836.The town is on the main road (the A99A9 road) linking John o' Groats with southern Britain. The Far North railway line links Wick railway station with southern Scotland and with Thurso, the other burgh of Caithness. Wick Airport is on Wick's northern outskirts. The airport has one usable runway. Two are disused. The main offices of The John O'Groat Journal and The Caithness Courier are located in Wick, as are Caithness General Hospital (run by NHS Highland), the Wick Carnegie Library and local offices of the Highland Council.
